It is the very first time Sophie is going on a winter vacation. She loves snow, I know, because the times there has been snow in the Netherlands in recent years she has been rolling through the snow like crazy. But I am very curious how she will experience it when we enter the ski elevators and slide down the slopes.
We are going to St. Anton in Austria this year. It is a large area with several villages connected. It is the first time we are in this area and that makes it more exciting for me than other years. On the one hand because this is the first time I will be skiing with Sophie, so I am very curious if and how it will go. And on the other hand because I do not know the area; which is an extra challenge now that I am going down the mountain with Sophie on my back.
Unfortunately, the weather is not really with us. There is snow on the day we arrive. And so we stay downstairs. Also fine, because then we can explore the village.
The next day the weather is not much better. Fortunately, it is dry, but the sun still does not really want to shine; and I always like that, because then the slopes are more visible.
But since I am very curious to see what it is like to ski with Sophie, we decide to go up anyway. Sophie gets her ski suit on, backpack along and hop there we go ...up the mountain.
In the gondola, as expected, things are going fine. Sophie trusts me and she is calm. At the top, we have to get ready before we can go down the slopes. Sophie gets her ski goggles on and goes into the backpack on my back.
Oops, this is quite a weight. Not really useful if you have back problems, but I would still like to try it myself before I give Sophie to my husband. I find it more exciting than I thought; going down the mountain together. Although I can ski well, I am aware that Sophie is on my back and we are therefore extra vulnerable together. Therefore, we carefully go down the slope. And another slope. And one more. It goes quite well. Yet I think it is wiser to stop. The visibility is not great and I notice that my back hurts a lot. Sophie is enjoying herself. She hangs her head out of the backpack. I think it is cool that we did it: skiing together.
Before we take the gondola down again, Sophie gets to go loose in the fresh snow. And she does! Passers-by think she is an avalanche dog, because she is constantly digging her little head into the snow.
The third day I can hardly walk from the pain. The trip up the mountain yesterday unfortunately did my body no good. The weather is great today, though: the sun is shining brightly. So I decide to go for a walk instead of skiing. Sophie can enjoy the snow again.
The last day begins sunny, but in the afternoon and evening it rains and snows continuously. We take a last walk through the village together. The next day we leave for Holland before dawn, so that we are ahead of the traffic jams.
All in all, it was a special experience to go on winter sports with Sophie. I loved seeing her enjoy it so much. Should we go again, I won't carry her myself, because that is just a bit too spicy. But it is certainly possible: skiing together. And I think that's really cool!
