Alligator lies in the sun on the shore at a lake

Detour takes us to alligators

Recently we were on our way to Key West in southern Florida, North America. The hubby really wanted to go there and so it happened that we left by car early one Friday morning. Without stops it was already a drive of more than six hours; quite a long trip. That's why we decided not to drive straight through, but to make the trip there an excursion. Stop here and there, take in the scenery along the way, have lunch somewhere. Just sitting in the car and driving from A to B is so boring; especially if you mainly drive on highways. So a good plan. But it turned out that that idea was mostly in my head. E. had in fact resolved to drive as fast as possible to the destination. A small miscommunication. But well, that happens more often.

After all noses were back in sync, we found a parking lot from which we could take a nice walk. Stretch our legs, let Sophie do her business and see if we could spot any special animals. After all, we are in Florida where a different kind of flora lives than in our country. We checked off the first two; we did not spot any special animals. We did see a very beautiful tree, and beautiful nature. Also definitely worth seeing. Nature makes me happy and calm anyway; greenery in particular.

Then hop back in the car. Just before the Keys' famous bridges, we saw another roadside sign with a detour route, off-road. We had no idea where it would take us. But hey, as adventurous as we are, we decided to opt for the detour. People who know me will laugh when they read this, because I am not that adventurous. Impulsive, though, so maybe it was an impulsive rather than adventurous action. Anyway, once on the dirt road we saw that the detour added almost an hour to the arrival time in Key West. But hope it's worth it then.

And it was! How much we enjoyed it. It was a bit colder than normal that day, read 22 degrees (still nice if you compare it to the current temperatures in the Netherlands), and that is quite chilly by Florida standards. Alligators like to be warm, especially when they are resting. So on cooler days they seek warmth by lying in the sun. That was our luck. We saw so many alligators: big, small, in action and basking in the sun. Really powerful to see those animals up close in the wild. We also spotted a turtle, egrets (very special, because they were almost extinct because they were hunted for their feathers, which were used to decorate hats), herons and beautiful nature.

So glad we made that detour. Key West was fun too. But I still thought those alligators were the best part of this trip.
